The journey: 4 months, 35 organizations and companies. 23 mentors and one team of 10 young entrepreneurial minds working for one vision called Startup Live Athens #1.

First days of November and while the Greek government is changing and media talk about the Greek crisis, somewhere in Athens, we witnessed a different view on what is happening during a crisis – We saw people working together, putting ideas into action and to draw a different picture than the one in the media.

We started with our pitch training ion Friday morning, in relaxed atmosphere at a coworking space in Athens. 29 pitchers were about to take the stage. On Saturday morning the number went down to 14. Teams merged in order to support stronger concept and to push them forward.

Saturday morning started with some gaming in order to get in the right mood and to keep the focus while the sun was shining over the Acropolis, which we were seeing from the Hellenic American Union.

Important ingredients to keep people focused and content are food, coffee, sweets…some beer and most important people to work with and to share the passion.

Sunday was focused on the pitches themselves. Before presenting to the audience mentors Tasos Pagakis, Head of Communication Ericsson Hellas and Katerina Kanelidou, Founder of Creative Empowerment, inspired our aspiring entrepreneurs with short talks.

The result: Over 100 people gathering for 54 hours working on 14 ideas put into action and presented as final pitches.

They now have the whole summer to basically work off their asses to get ready for the StartUp
Week, where they will participate at the StartUp Challenge and compete with 49 other startups for
10 slots to pitch in front of a panel that makes you lick your fingers.

It was great to be in Prishtina (again) and we are looking forward for the next chance to go there!

[STARTeurope Team Prishtina: over and out ]

A small country branded “The young Europeans” had a quite fired up weekend on the startup
scene. After intense days of pitch training, mentoring and competition “The Pitchers” were the ones
who “survived” and won the Startup Live Casting in Prishtina – a gateway to the European Startup
Festival happening in Vienna in October.
During the days of 11-12th June a small auditorium of the American University of Prishtina wasn’t
big enough for the bright ideas of the ambitious startup guys from Kosovo, who pitched many great
ideas from next generation learning systems to mobile apps for fighting the country’s corruption.
Can Ertugrul from i5invest spiced up the audience, giving advice on great pitching techniques and
next big things to motivate the participants, illustrated by various examples of success and failure.

To move ideas to the next level, Startup Live Prishtina made sure to bring experts from Vienna and
local mentors with international experience. After completing half-baked pitches on the first day it
was clear that these young potential startup guys could benefit a lot from mentors Mark Tuttle (I
have to call him “Wordsmither”), Bernhard Thalhammer (“The Yes Man”) and of course Can Ertugrul
(“The One”), in return the mentors were welcomed to join the traditional-great-hospitality dinner
covering startup topics.

“Pitching makes perfect”

To combine the model of local vs international experience the organizers brought mentors with
international experience. Kushtrim Xhakli (“The Deal closer”) and Arianit Dobroshi (“Master Joda”)
worked intensively on spreadsheets for modeling costs, revenue models and identifying the
problems of bootstrapping or refining a business model with every new customer.

After hours of engagement “The Penguin Community”, “The Pitchers” and “finD” were three out of
six teams to pitch on the big stage competing for the prize. The dropouts decided to stand back and
watch fearing failure.

The Penguins

Description:
The Penguins proposed to create a web-based community where people post articles, documents and ideas that directly contribute to a better life in the community. This way, users earn points which give an overview of who is contributing most to the community. The business idea is focused on the community side, so money would have to come from donations and NGOs.
Achievements:
Description: They already did have a brand, a preview of their web page and a way to make our living better.
Things to work on:
Too many similar projects around and potential investors might not be not interested.

The Pitchers

Description:
The Pitchers had a very good presentation, a business idea and a monetization model defined. They want to enhance the classical ways of education by challenging it with an interactive game structured in circles, which represent “knowledge galaxies” that connect with other circles of knowledge, and they expand circle by circle.
As Xhakli said, it’s sort of “Angry Birds meets Wikipedia”. There’s also the revenue model story, besides interactive learning of chemistry or math, companies can use the model to engage users by showing their products in an interactive way.
Achievements:
They convinced the jury and… won!
Things to work on:
They need to team up and make a working product for, “Startup Week”, the European Startup Festival.

finD

Description:
finD is highly qualified in technical terms, and they had an idea that should be competitive in thecontext of freelancer.com or elance.com. They try to build up a web/mobile service (they already have a working prototype) that could serve companies looking for a developer or designer close to them, and vice versa designers or developers can locate companies that post job offers.
Achievements:
The team demonstrated its working prototype and projected seven-digit revenues three years after launch.
Let’s see whether they can deliver on part two!
Things to work on:
In spite of their strong technological background, the presentation did not quite convince the expert panel, especially in the light of facing some big fishes as head-on competitors.

Wrap-up

During these two days, everyone learned a huge lesson on the startup business that they should keep in mind. Everyone was thrilled to be there and started practicing approaches, designing solutions and making field testing.

Before moving on to making a toast for the great time that everyone had, one should not forget everyone that helped to make this event happen in Kosovo.
First of all IPKO Foundation, a local NPO working towards improving the high tech entrepreneurial environment in Kosovo, then UNI Group under the leadership of its president Valmir Mustafa who did a great job organizing the event, then the guys from STARTeurope, a Vienna-based team that sets out to stimulate entrepreneurial
action and thinking around Europe, and ECiKS – an organization focused on promoting investments in Kosovo. There was also Unique, a junior enterprise team from Albania, which supported the event and brought some additional action to the second Startup Live event in Prishtina.

Well let’s say we will be seeing more and more ideas on next year’s event so stay tuned for more news from Kosovo’s startup scene, which is shaping gradually.

The scene in Vienna has changed over the last two years – peergroups, Steakups, incubators, us, Sektor5, media, funds… Blimey, it’s all coming along quite well! Every year it seems a Viennese startup wins Seedcamp. We have some of the biggest and baddest (in a good sense) VC’s investing in Austrian startups. This lill town is letting go of it’s crappy bureaucratic shackles and beginning to work it from the right direction: startups helping each other.

Saturday morning we were joined by Can who gave a presentation on the biz model canvas and after that by Andreas Klinger giving a talk about what he has learned in the last few years of building garmz.com. Check out the presentation here! It’s a good one.

Also, Jamila and Linda from mFarm, a mobile startup from Kenya visited us and told us what they have been doing since winning IPO48 in Nairobi in 2010.

The founders talk which took place on Saturday evening was full. We had three awesome people to pepper with questions, telling us their real war-stories. Bruno Haid (founder & CEO work.io, founder of System ONE), Alexander Kirk ( cofounded netvibes and now working on his own projects) and Chris Clay (CEO and cofounder of soup.me).   These guys have been around for about two years. Born out of passion for music and the realization that his daughter didn’t really have a good place to show their talents Christof launched TRS. All content is screened by him and his guys’n'gals and they have achieved their goal of building and helping the young musical geniuses of Austria. And you know what? They used ~no friggin social media. What does it say in your own marketing plan? Oh, facebook group? HA!

  The presentation shown on Sunday was great – the progress working on social media integration in their service was too. Hope to see it launched in two weeks.

  The fit with the price is almost too good to be true – €30k in marketing budget to work with young enterprises!

  This was the second time the gang attended STARTup Live Vienna. Since last time much has changed. The team of 8 has set out to give you, me and all other innovative people their own show.   At the end presentation they demoed their newest format “ Laber’s Lab ” which had been shot during the weekend. Oc these guys brought their own equipment including a 50″+ TV showing their stuff!

  The handling of documents, images, comments, tasks and recordings which you have to live with being an engineer at a construction site is idiotic.

  Domagoj who has experience in the field and know the problems personally set out to change this with a tablet app. It would integrate with the existing documentation and comms platforms but simplify the process – seeing to it that building projects do not succumb under their own weight in red tape.

Simply submit your hitch, in a few words or images, lay back, and follow the mind-stream of the community. Once you feel inspired again, share out kudos to those who inspired you most.   Over the weekend the team put together the central parts of the system. Still lacking a kickass UI, but they’ll get there.

Another Live is over, but we are happy to announce that the next event is taking place in Pristina in a few days, another couple of events are planned for Porto, Hungary and Germany. Requests are dropping in like crazy. At the end of the summer, we will be ready to handle them well enough to go forward with these hundreds of requests!

The result is a real-world mobile game targeting the question “Can the worldwide smartphone community bring all puzzle pieces of the earth back to its origin just by traveling with the virtual pieces and trading them to other players nearby?”

  Moneys? Yeah they thought of that too, don’t worry But I don’t know if I can write about that so early in the process.

  Being addicted to Swedish candy myself I totally get the need for this one. A community of international shoppers helping each other get the newest and most localized products. I’d get all the falukorv and gott & blandat I could handle! Rock on! Their strategy is to start small, focusing on a small batch of products in their communications and using the means that are there. Could be fun.

Bike City Guide

  Bike optimized navigation system for touristic city trips
• Description:
  A mobile app, already working, which offers guided tours for bike trips in touristic areas. They are currently working on point-point-navigation, which should be available in a bit. Shortly before joining Live, their project got accepted to Science Park’s incubation program.
  
  The maps work offline and of course use audio to tell you what you are seeing as you bike around – you shouldn’t be staring at a 7-inch-screen while crossing the street!

  in time and smart gas analytics
• Description:
  Bernd teamed up with August and what came out was awesome. One of them has been working on isotope identification and is opening up a private research institute in Austria. The other one has developed a portable just-in-time gas analytics device for use by industry, governmental agencies and military. Combine the two? And you get a tool big as a pack of cigarettes, able to tell from which source the cancerogenic gasses are coming from. Not bad at all. Will be exciting to follow this project

  There is an overload of information out there. Forum posts miles long, blog posts of 8k words, sentiments on twitter, facebook and… gah. Sometimes, all you need is a summarized listing of statements split totally black & white into pro and contra.
  
  By using orat.io, this can be achieved.
  
  Bernhard’s end presentation was great, rhetorical and short. In the next month, he will prototype it on a tech level and then gather input from the field. A team will be put together and we’ll see where he takes it from there.

Stenography Project

  Write like a ninja
• Description:
  Sadly Gregor had to leave to pick up guests arriving by bike from France, so he didn’t have time to prepare a presentation! So, he did the the hard core way: using his dry humour and voice.

  The idea: we are all slow. By using stenography, we’d be up to 66% faster! So, we should all learn it. He intends to implement a smart phone app helping you learn the system of steno, and also a notepad for stenography interpretation – teaching and enabling you to write like a ninja.

We are still waiting for the data on the last pitch, there is one missing. The guys who Gregor had to pick up, from France, also got to pitch their project at the live. Awesome people with the goal to interview school children on their way from Paris to Beijing, doing a documentary on their project. Will tell you more as we have more data

Their plan is to create these environment together with the coworking spaces of the world – leading to the STOPeurope-game (yeah baby!!). Starting with a workshop on 3.11, at the Hub Vienna.

  With a number of years as a manager in larger corporations, Matjaz saw the need to make people feel that the effort they put into their work actually has an effect. Said and done – MG is a task management and delegation system which kicks ***. Simplified, reduced and optimized to take as small a part as possible on the side of the users. The missing puzzle piece is addressed by adding game mechanics to the equation.

  The team worked on the game system and visualizations during the weekend – now all they need to do is implement.

  By the by, game mech’s is the social web of the next decade according to Seth Priebatsch and Jesse Schell, among many others.

  Entrepreneurs and visionaries are blossoming – DreamaTV will be their channel and show. By equipping coworking spaces with access to the channel and curating the content which is generated, coworking spaces, entrepreneurs and the world gain in PR, publicity and visions. Aggregating all these grand changers and building a show of the greatest ideas of the month – DreamaTV will be a high quality producer of visionary, crowd-sourced material.

  They already have 2 customers, gained during the weekend! How’s that for bloody traction?

  This was the third time that Runtastic entered the foray. As winners of STARTup Live Vienna #2, these guys now decided to implement a badge/achievement system into their sports-platform. All in one weekend. Said, and done. Wait for the next release! The whole team of 7 people travelled to Vienna for the weekend – was great to see them again! Awesome guys!

TarifAgent

• Description:
  This team decided to tackle the jungle of cell phone tarifs. Crazy – do you know how many different combos of prices and packages there are in Austria alone? 45k. Done, and done. Since 2008 they have mapped and enabled running evaluations of all providers in Austria – and on their platform they allow users to check what combo would be best for them. All in all, that has made out 1.8M different combos mapped since 2008.
  
  This weekend, they sketched and started developing an Android app to automate the comparison.

  As we’ve already seen, many are going in the direction of games. The pitcher presented at the last STARTup Live Vienna too, and this time, they went on to prototype their vision. Working with designers and experts from the field of sports they made heaps of progress. By designing common goals as achievements in a game – people are motivated to actually take the next step – rising in level as a tennis player, cook, marathon runner or being a good guy/gal. The UI prototype looks friggin great, gonna see if we cannot get a screen of it.

  traditional food – urban taste
• Description:
  Fresh food based on traditional recipes – available in several locations. The prototype of this restaurant chain to be is to be built close to a university in Vienna. By combining “Grandma” and “Zotter” – traditional food with urban trend – the opportunity will be addressed. Next steps: design concept, customer interviews and research, dish prototypes.

  Christopher Bergthaler is a chef since 10 years and worked with a team fro Austria and Germany on refining the concept. The pitch was something totally different than the presentation – which we love. Pivots ftw.

3TO – pharma and Success Time are still missing, but should pop up in here in a day or 2

What can one say. We had a blast. Teams were awesome and our feet still hurt from dancing at the afterparty. Who would have thought that Manu would be on par with Marius when it comes to shaking it! WOW!

The teams are now working on realizing their next milestones, until November 27, which is when the next STARTup Lounge takes place @ Sektor 5. During the afternoon, they get to show their shiz and if they have made it, they will have the opportunity to enter our mentoring program and get an office for a few months!

Using datamining and semantic audio analysis in their application, sonarflow, they can cluster and help explore large music collections – allowing their users to find the hidden gems in their libraries and also find new music, which fits the collection.

sonarflow runs on the iPad and groups your music by genre, displayed on screen as colored bubbles. Enabling the user to simply click through the interface and double tap to start playing.

Description:
The team has developed a new door technology which removes the hassle and space waste of normal garage doors – it simply disappears into the ground. Think 007. Damn cool. Their product is called Fantom T01.

The whole system is built modularly, so that the designable parts can all be exhanged and made to fit the environment.

Actually, the door is installed at one of the founders home! Have to go there! Vienna, send’m an email!

Wadi is a system which helps to clean water in developing countries – the problem is HUGE and the solution looks bloody great. Hearing how many hospital beds are occupoed due to unclean water per year was pretty astounding! 50%!!? Sick. I’ll try to get my grubby hands on the presentation.
Supplying a device which is screwed on to a plastic water bottle, it notifies the user when the water has been purified – and is safe to drink.

This stuff could be great – invest?

Semantic information organizing and finding. Who can remember all that stuff you need to? You? I believe not. And neither does Leo. Therefore, he developed cluug.com, a SAAS which connects stuff – whatever it is.

Via plugins for devices and systems like outlook, data, groups and all can be connected to contacts etc – but this is only a small part of the solution! The information and the connections can be used in all applications, where the plugins are available.

In the next few months, the service will be integrated in googles product portfolio.
