STARTup Live Prishtina #1 Roundup

Apr 19 15:59

Key facts

  • Date: 26 – 28 March 2010
  • Place: American University in Kosovo (AUK), Prishtina
  • Participants: 76
  • Idea pitches: 24
  • Venture teams: 7

Summary:

The first STARTup Live event in the Balkans took place in the Republic of Kosovo, Europe’s youngest state. Upon invitation by the three host organizations, ECIKS, UNI Group and START, 70 students and entrepreneurs from Prishtina met a delegation of European business people and venture experts at the American University in Kosovo for a weekend of intensive idea generation and business planning.

Following the format developed at Vienna’s successful STARTup events, participants pitched as many as 24 ideas from the broadest range of business topics to their peers, followed by a swift team-building process that championed seven concepts to be worked on in detail over the weekend.

While teams were busy getting their ideas and visions translated into real-world business scenarios, they received support from an interdisciplinary group of coaches. Even during lunch break, Startup Weekend served its participants entrepreneurial brain food: Andreas Klinger, co-founder of garmz.com, enriched the audience at AUK’s terrace with real-life anecdotes in his entertaining luncheon “entrepreneur’s report”.

The teams’ final presentations were held at the closing event Sunday afternoon under the patronage of Prof. Enver Hoxhaj, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo. Valuable feedback and market insight was provided by our experienced local and international panelists:

Experts Panel

  • Linda Shala – Director Data Project Electronics, Prishtina
  • Shpend Ahmeti – Executive Director GAP Institute , Prishtina
  • Shkumbin Brestovci – General Manager RROTA, Prishtina
  • Kujtim Dobruna – President ECIKS, Vienna
  • Mark Tuttle – biogy.com, USA
  • Nicolai Sawczynski – ARGE Bildungsmanagement, Vienna
  • Bernhard Thalhammer – First Love Capital, Vienna

START and its co-hosts will continue to support this weekend’s entrepreneurs as they move on. To quote one participant’s feedback form, they “are counting the weeks to the follow-up event”.

Saturday night status of the teams

Mar 27 23:06

After talking to the experts the teams continued working on the ideas, sometimes by taking new points of view, sometimes by developing the ideas further

Lazy Land

The members of this team by their own words «feel more confident» after dicussing their idea with the experts!
They have gone through financial calculations and are prepared to spread the word about the new youth corner which will bring together entertainment and education.

F1 Information centre

Developed a big vision during the day, then went through idea downscaling. Redefined the core value of the product and now are working on the presentation for Sunday, mentored by Mark Tuttle!

Afterschool daycare «KIKIKS»
«We are doing it!» – Today the team clearly defined the idea, financials, HR and other needs as well as the possible strategies for achieving breakeven early on (the team had been working intensively all morning with Nikolai Sawzcynski and Waltraud Kern of ARGE Bildungsmanagement, Vienna) They also already registered an e-mail address – contact them tomorrow!

Daily difabori

The team has conducted marketing research on the streets of Prishtina. In the process of enhancing the distribution channels. Focusing on the definition of the value proposition. Researching competitive landscape!

Rakovica 325

Entered into negotiations with IMAX, performed international price analysis interviews (Sofia, Skopje and Zagreb) for 2D and 3D cinema tickets. See potential for cooperation or joint venture with the only cinema operator in Prishtina.

Fitopreparate

This big team was the first to begin working on its presentation and is now investigating some more details. Will get feedback by expert group Sunday 10 a.m.

KOS BIKE

Simple plan: bringing the sophisticated bike rental systems known from European capitals to Kosovo, however reducing complexity dramatically in the beginning by using staffed outlets instead of automated terminals. Team also addressed cultural issue: biking is not commonly established in Kosovo. Potential solution:”Prishtina Bike Nights”, guided bike tours on the roads closed for traffic with several hundred people on Friday nights. Incentive: free drinks afterwards ;-)

See you tomorrow!
