Qriously Launching!

Mar 04 19:18

qriously.com

qriously.com You’re in for a treat. The winner of STARTup Live Vienna #3, qriously.com, is doing a soft launch today.

Based on their vision that your point of view should have a higher value than your potential purchase power, that the way that internet ads work is wrong and suck in general, the team set out to change the game.

Today their service is launching: instead of ads in your mobile apps and on mobile web pages, questions are asked. Qriously is a tool to test for real time, location based sentiment in the mobile population of the world. Powerful stuff.

The team behind qriously.com minutes before launchThe team behind it is led by CEO and co-founder Christopher Kahler, who has become a close friend of STARTeurope. In his words:
“Qriously enables us to determine what millions of people think about something right now, at any given location. Our initial testing shows very promising engagement rates versus traditional mobile ads. With this launch, we hope to define the real-time, location-based sentiment space.”

They are currently based in Sektor 5, Vienna, but will soon be leaving for their new HQ in London, UK. At the moment, 15 minutes before launch, the coworking space is quiet. We are about 20 people here, but everyone is waiting and some holding their breath. If you didn’t know, launching is a BIG thing for a startup with it’s goals set high.

Accel PartnersThere are a few venture firms which make you wonder how they can so often be right. Since a few months back one of the international VC all-stars, Accel Partners, is backing the company. Qriously.com thereby joins the family of Facebook, Admob, Etsy, Groupon, Real Network and other household names.

We are deeply humbled by this statement from Chris, minutes before launching:
“Thanks to STARTeurope for making this possible.”

3 days in the life of a startup – Runtastic reporting

Feb 25 11:10

Florian GschwandtnerThis is a guest post by Florian Gschwandtner, co-founder and CEO of runtastic.

An excerpt from his diary, during a few days of February. Visiting MWC, interviewing with a German tv-channel, drinking “enough” and lack of sleep would be the summary. Or in his words: “Work hard, play hard.”

Day Zero – 13th of February

MWCOn Sunday 13th I, Christian, Stefan and Lin started our trip to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. With a packed calendar and immense expectations we arrived on Sunday evening. After a few beers we went to bed in our two-star-motel, not very fancy but close to the venue.

Day One – 14th of February

We started at 7AM.

A tough day. Two lectures by Nokia and WAC and about 3 meetings planned.

In the evening a great dinner with some startup colleagues from Madrid, working on busuu.com. It was a pleasure to meet these guys, awesome people.
The Spanish wine is really strong. Lesson learnt.

Went to bed at 3:00AM.

Day Two - 15th of February

The next morning (with a touch of a headache) another interesting day begun with a breakfast meeting. This day was the hardest and until 6PM we’d had about 6 meetings.

Ended the day with a walk down the tourist street called “Rambla” – finding a nice restaurant with Sangria discount. Good stuff.

Day Three - 16th of February

Hard getting up, the first meeting at 10AM. Fortunately our partner had also had a hard and long night… so the meeting was relaxed.

After a last successful day at the MWC we spent a few minutes in the port of Barcelona, ice tea and snacks.

We left Barcelona by airplane at 8:30PM and arrived in Vienna at two hours later. Got home and fell asleep at 1AM.

Day Four - 17th of February

Normally I would have liked to sleep till 10AM after these three hardcore days in Barcelona, but Focus Tv had called a few days before to arrange an interview about runtastic…

“Dear Mr. Gschwandtner, is February 17th in Munich okay for the interview?”
“Sure, it´s no problem”
Looking back, not the best reply.

Clock set to 4:30 in the morning. Got up, hopped on the train to Munich. Life as an entrepreneur can be hard.

We had a great interview; me with small eyes and a crappy voice. Oh and it turned out it was not just an interview – it was a full day movie session and I came back to Austria around 8PM. Fell asleep within a minute.

A tough week. But in my words – “Work hard, play hard”.

Cheers,
Florian Gschwandtner – runtastic

STARTup Hour #1 Roundup

Apr 13 07:08

On March 18th a group of about 50 participants gathered at Nelsons, located in the middle of the Tech University of Vienna, to partake in the very first STARTup Hour.

It was the first stop for the participants of the LIFT@Austria conference, exploring enabling spaces and organizations in the region. The attendees were from Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, UK, Hungary, Belgium, US, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Belgium and Ecuador – making it a somewhat international gathering.

The innocent souls were put through a blistering hour of pitching, forming teams, working and presenting their own ideas at a rapid pace! Welcome, to STARTup Hour #1!

startuphour#1roundup

Simply put:

  • - You get 60 seconds to pitch
  • - You form a team to work with
  • - You WORK focused for one hour.

Pitches

  • STARTup Jam
  • Meet a Homeless
  • OpenIdeas – http://www.openideas.eu
  • Lowering Corruption
  • eduvent – http://www.eduvent.at
  • DeskSurfing
  • and more…

The pitchers all got tickets for the STARTup Live event in Vienna, June 11-13!

It was a very interesting experience, condensing our startup event to one hour, and we believe that we can use this format for some very focused networking/feedback events in the future.

Whenever you have a good idea, in the end it is wasted and forgotten because you either had it at the wrong place or at the wrong time. Or maybe you are just missing the spark of inspiration to come up with something good. You might have problems launching your own ideas and be better at contributing to other person´s ideas and make them better.
Maybe you have tried to find people to engage in a discussion about an idea or project, but you haven´t found the right ones.
Perhaps you want to realize an idea but are missing some core skills to do that ?

Eduvent

Eduvent combines the words “education“ and “event“. It is a service that provides professional searching and registration for educational events like a mathematic lecture, a discussion meeting that deals with globalization or a recruiting event of a consulting company. Eduvent is the perfect link between young, involved people and excellent events. We communicate educational offerings in a fast and easy way, tailored to the individual needs of the seekers and suppliers.
Our platform promotes further educational and carrier events addressing students and young professionals, no matter if they are just looking for a single event or want to be regularly updated. Our service substitutes the costly and time consuming search on websites and a flood of annoying newsletters from different hosts.

Hosts are enabled to promote and administer their presentations, workshops, lectures, symposia and similar events in a central, fast and easy way. Further upcoming features will be a ticketing service and a facebook application.
All founders of eduvent are students, who met at the startup weekend in Vienna.

“Without the Startup Weekend Vienna I would have never found such a great team and idea. Startup Weekend is an awesome combination of a networking and a performing event. I often ask myself how I could get along without it. I am already looking forward to the next Startup Weekend to meet new people and get started on new projects.” – Jochen Schanbacher, Startup Weekend participant and co-founder of eduvent.
